"Do not make the mistake of treating your dogs like humans or they will treat you  like dogs." - Martha Scott

Dog and puppy obedience training is the essential foundation training that every canine and owner should have.  Most owners mistakingly believed they need to have their dogs trained when in fact the owners need the education more than the dog do.

The most important component in any successful relationship between dog and owner is that the owner understands the dog and that the dog understands the owner.

Here at Pittsburgh K9 Training we teach you how to develop and foster that relationship.  We don't train dogs we train owners.

The most common mistakes owner make is to take their dogs with behavior problems to obedience classes. Dog and puppy obedience training and behavior problem solving are two different things.

The best thing you can do is have a qualified dog trainer evaluate you and your dog, to ensure you are investing in the best solution.

Top Ten Mistakes Owners

Make with a New Puppy

1.  They forget the puppy will grow up.

Things that are cute as a puppy will not

be cute when the puppy grows up.

2.   They call puppy by name to correct

bad behavior.  This causes the puppy to

start associating his name with being

      corrected for bad behavior.

3.    They don't set aside the proper time

for puppy.  A new puppy is like a new

baby, they require a lot of time and

       attention.

4.   They don't socialize puppy properly.

New puppies need to get out and be

      exposed to different sounds, surfaces,

      environments, other puppies and people.

5.   They don't establish they are the

      authority figure.  Puppies need to

know who is boss from the day they

come home. Owners don't have to get

physical with puppies to show them the

      dos and  the don'ts.

6.   They do no teach the puppy the

word "NO."  No is just as important

as  the  puppy learning his own name.

This is the best way to begin correcting

       early puppy behavior problems.

7.   They forget the puppy is a puppy.

Many new owners get frustrated with

typical puppy behavior.  A puppy is like

a new born baby and has to grow and

learn with love and guidance just like a

       baby.

8.   They don't correct the puppy

       properly when he makes mistakes.

Correcting a puppy improperly is a

       confidence breaker and can cause

        stress, fear and anxiety.  Improper

        correction will break the owner/puppy

        bond.

9.   They miss the puppy imprinting

stage.  This is when to puppy is most

adaptable to receive and learn specific

      commands and behaviors.  The best

thing owners can do is read up on their

      breed and understand the maturity

stages as each breed is different.

10.  They give puppy too much too soon.

A new house, family and environment

can be overwhelming for a new puppy.

It is important to take it slow and give

the  puppy a small space in the

house then as he does well with that

give him more as time goes on rather

than giving him the run of the house

        initially.
